Because implants are built exactly like natural teeth, you’ll be able to dig into all of your favorite foods with the same ease that you did before tooth loss. However, many classic summer foods can still pose a threat to your dental implants if you’re not careful. Here are four tips for protecting your smile this summer while enjoying the treats of the season!

1. Be Careful with Corn on the Cob

No summer barbeque is complete without a side of corn on the cob. Unfortunately, biting straight into it can all too easily cause kernels to get trapped between your gums and your implant (or a natural tooth). In addition to feeling annoying, having a piece of food stuck in your teeth can attract bacteria that cause gum disease – an infection that could lead to dental implant failure. The bacteria might also increase the risk of decay in your remaining teeth.

To avoid the inconvenience and oral health risks of corn on the cob, try cutting the corn off of the cob before eating it.

2. Eat Hot Dogs in Moderation

Hot dogs are another summer staple. As delicious as they are, they’re also chock-full of processed saturated fat, and the buns are high in carbohydrates. Together, this means that hot dogs can increase the risk of gum inflammation and possibly even full-fledged gum disease, especially if you eat them too often.

Does this mean you can never have hot dogs again? Not at all – just remember that moderation is key when it comes to foods that could harm your implants.

3. Cut Back on Sugary Beverages

Sodas, fruit juices, and sports drinks are all common ways to stay hydrated while beating the summer heat. As you may have guessed, though, all of that sugar doesn’t exactly benefit your oral health. The more you sip these beverages, the more your teeth, implants, and gums are bathed in sugar. As a result, your risk of gum infections and tooth decay increases.

When possible, choose to stay hydrated with plain water instead of sugary drinks – your smile will thank you. If you’re going to drink something sugary, rinse your mouth with water afterward to wash some of the sugar off of your teeth.

4. When in Doubt, Check with Your Dentist

Sometimes, it can be hard to tell whether a particular food or beverage could be harmful to your dental implants. If you’re ever unsure, don’t be afraid to give your dentist a call. The foods that are okay for you to eat will depend on your individual oral health, so your dentist is the best person to ask regarding how to take care of your smile.

As long as you exercise the right precautions, you should be able to maintain a delicious, nutritious diet with dental implants. With proper care, they should give you a lifetime of healthy smiles!

About the Author

Dr. Bruce E.
