Is It Okay to Drink Alcohol After a Tooth Extraction?

Three alcoholic drinks on a table

While a tooth extraction isn’t a procedure that many people look forward to, modern dental techniques and technology have made it faster and more comfortable than ever! The full recovery process typically takes a few quick weeks, with the initial healing phase lasting only a couple of days. But this is only true when you follow your dentist’s post-op instructions to the letter.

Reaching for an alcoholic drink may seem like a great way to relax while they recover, but that may not be the best idea. Read on to find out if and when you can drink alcohol after a tooth extraction.

How Can Alcohol Affect Healing After a Tooth Extraction?

As you get the rest you need after a tooth extraction, you may consider enjoying a glass of wine or another alcoholic beverage to help yourself unwind. However, this can affect the healing process in a few ways:

  • Blood Clot Formation: After a tooth extraction, the empty socket gets filled with a blood clot. This is essential to healing as it protects the sensitive nerve endings and keeps the area clean. All types of alcohol thin your blood, potentially making you bleed more and preventing blood cells from bonding and forming the needed clot.
  • Pain Medication: Your dentist may prescribe painkillers or recommend over-the-counter medications to help relieve discomfort. However, mixing alcohol with these pain relievers can have some dangerous effects on your body.

When Can You Enjoy a Drink of Alcohol After a Tooth Extraction?

The best way to know how long until it’s okay to have alcohol after your tooth extraction is to ask your dentist directly! Every patient’s situation is different, so you may have to wait longer than average if other oral health issues (such as gum disease or dental infection) are also being treated. Typically, it’s advised to wait 7 to 10 days to give the extraction site time to heal. If you are taking any prescribed pain medication, then it’s best to wait until you finish the entire round before enjoying a drink.

Tips to Ensure a Smooth Recovery After Having a Tooth Removed

While recovering from a tooth extraction, avoiding alcohol is a great way to keep your mouth healthy. Here are some other tips to promote better healing for a faster recovery process:

  • Take it easy and get plenty of rest after the procedure.
  • Place an ice pack on your cheek to help reduce swelling.
  • Avoid using straws and rinsing your mouth vigorously, as they can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Avoid smoking or using tobacco products for at least three days after the procedure.
  • Drink water to stay hydrated. If you’re craving flavor, then lukewarm herbal and non-caffeinated teas or clear broths are an option.
  • Eat soft, nutritious foods to avoid any stress on the extraction site.

Healing from a tooth extraction doesn’t have to be a tough journey. Avoiding alcohol and following these tips can help you heal swiftly and comfortably!
